I am curious if anyone knows of an easy to administer POP3/SMTP/IMAP email server that can be used under OS X. Since Filmaker has released an OS X version (Which seems to work flawlessly so far) I am no longer interested in getting OS X Server 2.0 and now I only need an email server. Any thoughts?

There are detailed articles on Stepwise.com about setting up a Postfix/IMAP mail server on your OS X system. However, if you aren't to versed in Unix or CLI commands, it may not be the easiest thing to follow. But, there is a solution... CommuniGate Pro! It is free to download an install, and use, but it adds a small tag line to any e-mail that it handles (only shows up in text based e-mail, at least that I've seen), and as long as you don't have a massive install needed for hundreds of users, a base license is only moderately costly. In my opinion, however, it is the easiest to use, easiest to administer mail server out there, especially given the functionality and adaptability of the system. Check it out at stalker.com.

Cool. I thought that the price on the communigate software was a little steep.

It's steep if you intend to host a lot of accounts. On the whole, however, given what is included in the package, it is very affordable. And, they have "difference" upgrade pricing, which is great if you have unexpected growth spurts (i.e., you can buy the entry level package for $499 and if you suddenly find yourself hosting more accounts you only have to pay the difference between what you already paid and the next level up).

The package is feature rich, extremely powerful, easy to configure and manage, and stalker has some great customer service personnel. I think the best thing they do is actually give the software away, as well as setup support. They want to make sure you are happy with the program and that it does what you need it to BEFORE you pay one red cent!
