Hello

Does anybody know how to start the DNS Service in the background when the server has been restarted, without entering the server admin, and starting it by hand (even without entering the server at all).

Check out the following link: http://www.qwerta.com/macosx-bind-howto.html

Close to the end of the page it a link to a file named DNS.tar.gz.

It is an archive that contains a folder which you can put in your startup folder. Check out the instructions on the page.

This worked for me.

sudo ndc start

sudo ndc stop

sudo ndc restart

But, on the Server version of OS X you really should start it through the Server Admin control app.

Actually, the download above is just an executable script. Unlike Web services under OS X Server, DNS will not activate at startup, as this is not an option under the Server Admin. Not sure why they didn't include this option, but the startup script works just the same. This way if your server needs to restart itself, it will automatically start DNS services for you.
