I'll try to keep this brief. I am a college student and the treasurer of my Fraternity. I have a beige 266/128. I am majoring in MIS so I have recently had to switch to an NT OS. I know this sounds like a question that might come from some one with high goals and low actualy knowledge but trust me I do not fit this description. Although I am still learning I am not far away from taken two of my first MCSE exams so I do have a networking knowledge. Anyway here is what I want to do. In my Fraternity all of the rooms have ethernet right now that we have been using. What I would like to do is take my G3 and use it as a server. What I don't know is what I want to do with this server. I am basically asking for any ideas that would give me an excuse to do this. I know this sounds wierd, but I want to use this OS and just see how it compares to the alternative and in reality I am in a good position to do this. I am the treasurer so if I want it I can get it (nice little perk), but even I need something to justify my actions with. The only way I can get to know OSX Server is if I actually get to use it, and to use it I have to buy it, and to buy it I need a reason. Please give me one! Anything from gaming to whatever you can come up with would be more than helpful. I should also note that the larger majority of the computers in this house are wintel based. Thank you

Is there a server in the frat now? To run Mac OS X Server 2.0 (due - not sure if May or July) would be best way to go.

RAM, SCSI, multiple ethernet cards, routers, etc. Neat project to add to your resume. Right now everyone is on the campus wide LAN, or is there a local LAN you'd host and then you would have to tie into (ATM?) or whatever fiber backbone is in use.

Security. Less vulnerable to attacks. Protect files. Cross-platform.

How about some books on networking a cross-platform environment?

You need a clear picture and schmatic.

There are quite a few useful things you can do with a server (Mac or *nix).

1. Make it a Squid server. See: http://www.squid-cache.org/
A Squid server in my opinion is the most useful thing you can do for your brothers... there is virtually nothing to teach them on how to use it. And it will make all their websurfing easier and faster.

2. A webserver. Depending on how the campus (or your house) is connected you can set up a webserver and host students and the fraternity's "personal" page(s). Pretty handy but kinda redundant if the school already supplies those resources.

3. Database server. MySQL/PHP/Apache... all kinds of useful stuff can be done with this... the sky is NOT the limit... your imagination is.

4. Samba file server. Very useful IF anyone is interested in keeping or sharing files from the server (MP3s, MPEGs, WAVs, whatevers). As a repository for common downloads, as a backup for their "My Documents" directory. If you store other peoples files on your server you better have a damn good backup plan.
