I have Dual533 on my desk at home that my wife and I both have 'accounts' on. I also have a Bronze G3 that I use for work. Occasionally, one of us is on the G4 while the other would like to be, and one of us is stuck using my work laptop without our Home directory, documents, mail, favorites etc.
I don't know enough about NetInfo to do what I'm asking. (hence the question)
I want to set NetInfo up on the desktop G4 to the extent that from my laptop, I can log in as a 'network user' and have it log in as the user that resides on the G4 desktop.
Any ideas?
thnx
GregM.

In this forum, the answer is simply "Install OS X Server and RTM!"
However, I assume you are not really interested in OS X Server but posted to this forum in the hopes of finding someone "server literate"...
I tried a search (as suggested) and failed to find anything... and I knew exactly what I was looking for... so, I posted the answer you're looking for again...

Were you looking for this thread? And, no, I didn't copy and paste text from your new instructions to search for this thread.

Kennedy,
I spent an hour searching the forums last night until I found the (several) threads that you (and mactroll) posted in. VERY informative. I also spent about an hour reading the "Understanding NetInfo" pdf.
I used your instructions, and with little effort I was able to create a user that I could log in on network machines. However, I could not successfully create an nfs share and have that users' home folder reside there.
In the /mounts directory of each local netinfo db I have:
name - 192.168.1.2:/Another (my chosen directory)
'dir' with value "/Network/Another".
'vfstype' with value "nfs".
'opts' with values "bg", "union", and "w".
In the network netinfo db, I have the user's home entry reading:
name - testing
home - /Network/Another/testing
When I log in as that user, the home directory can not be found, but if I click on Network, "Another" shows up as a share, and inside is the home folder called "testing". I don't know why it won't see that as the home directory.
I just found my copy of X Server (and the 10.1 update!) But haven't seen how to do it "the right way" with server. What's "RTM"?
Thanks for your help. Both now and with all your previous posts!!
GregM.

Did you ever try logging out and simply logging in again?
The NFS connections happen in background processes that are slightly
slow. After a restart I usually count to 10 slowly before logging in...
to make sure the directories are there *before* the login looks for them.
If its not that, a few questions:
1) When you click on the Home button in finder, where does it take you?
2) When you go into /Network/Another/testing, are you able to access all
the folders in that directory?

Read The Manual. In this case, the Administrators Guide, which is available on the web, walks you through the steps of setting up OS X Server. Ignore the parts about needing to setup DNS... you can skip that but you'll have to use the IP numeric addresses in the remainder of the instructions. It will use Apple File Service rather than NFS to mount the share points... but that actually works better anyway.
BTW, if you have trouble accessing the Administrators Guide from its normal link, go into the discussion section, and one of the permanent first threads tells you to read that manual and gives a link that works much more reliably.

No, I was looking for the one that was in the Support forum... but eventually I did a search through the entire MacNN for a phrase I cut-n-paste from the note and got one match, a note by someone else. I did not turn up that thread that you found (which has the phrase).

I didn't try logging out and logging back in again. I should try that when I get the chance. Clicking "home" tells me, "that directory could not be found" or something similar. (I'm not at those machines right now). The initial log in opens to the "computer" in icon view, allong with a dialog "The home folder could not be found in it's usual location. If it is on a Network volume, the network may be unavailable. Contact your sys admin."
I do have access to the (one) folder I put in the "Another" folder.
RTM: Read the Manual. Got it. Just when I thought i was down with all the iLingo... <embarrased> I actually searched versiontracker thinking RTM was a utility </embarrased>
Thanks again!
GregM.
