I am at a University that has Macs set up around campus along wtih PCs for general student use. Students are required to log in to any of the PCs in order to use those machines but there is no such security for any of the Macs. I am trying to convince the IT department to get OS X server to control these cluster Macs. There are about 250 Macs around campus, and from what I am told they will all be wired with 100Mbps and the oldest will be 5 flavor iMacs. That also makes them a good candidate for netboot.
The problem is that I can't find any way to import the user data into OS X Server. Is there a way that the user's login information can be stored on the Windows 2000 server (as it is now) and then when the students enter their name and password on the cluster Mac, the OS X server authenticates an NT box to allow access to the machine? OR, is there a quick way to import 5000+ user entried from an NT box? (The school might possibly keep unix accounts for each student as well so can those be imported ?) Are there any third party add-ons for OS X that will allow this? Thanks.
That is really the only thing holding back the IT department from buying OS X Server right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
