Obviously, any OS X Server installation is incomplete without regularly scheduled backups. The OS X organization of Users makes the most critical stuff easy to find. But there appears to be complete lack of any backup software... in fact, I can't even figure out how to make a proper backup...

'ditto' cannot copy 'Users' properly as it does not preserve the owner and group settings

'tar' cannot copy 'Users' properly as it does not preserve the creator and type information, nor does it preserve resource forks

Drag n' drop in Finder, of course, doesn't preserve owner and group, nor even permissions

I tried using 'Toast' to do it, but it does not preserve owner and group

I've been looking through the many backup and sync apps on Version Tracker... several are highly rated by many people, but evidently people who don't care that owner, group, and permissions aren't being preserved...

Is there *any* tool that will make a proper backup of an OS X Users directory?

And if so, is there any way to schedule that such that it runs at particular times?

Thanks.

I haven't actually tried the two, but there is an OS X version of Retrospect out, and a cool AppleScript backup that can be scheduled using cron at RAILhead Design.

Retrospect for OSX is still Beta. I know someone who is testing it and he says it's flawless. If this servers data is important though...

The final ver. is supposed to be available soon (by the end of first quarter is what I heard).

For backup, there is no program better. Windows or Mac!

It schedules, it runs about every tape drive available, backs up to CD or hard drive (even firewire).

I have been holding off my OS X server switch because Retrospect isn't out yet.
