I'm buying an OS X Server, and have noticed that Apple didn't update the server hardware with the release of the silver Power Macs. Can I buy the OS X Server software separately, and install in on the 867 Power Mac? Has anyone tried this?
I realize it's a little early to be looking for reports with new hardware, but I'm sure the speed difference between a 533 and a 867 is considerable.

Alright, nobody seems to know. However, I'm thinking that since the new Power Macs come with a different build of OS X (4R14) than the current server OS, the answer is probably "no."

Well, that munches great big huge donkey balls.
I am starting to seriously consider MacOS X Server for my organization, but there is no way I am going to buy either of the current offerings (533 for $3000 or dual-533 for $4000), when the *low end* of the new G4 line is a 733 for $1700. I, for one, will wait for OS X Server to be updated for the newest Macs, rather than buy hardware that is already old.
HOWEVER: I plan to buy a new MacOS X Server, hardware AND software, the day it is released for the current G4 line.
ARE YOU LISTENING, APPLE?

Alright, I did some digging and I found a solution to my problem. It's not ideal (I won't be getting a QuickSilver server), but it will work. Note: all prices in Canadian dollars.
As an education customer, I can still buy the single 533 (40 hard drive/128 RAM/CD-ROM/etc.) for $1729. I'll take the 40 hard drive out, and put in two 60 hard drives for roughly $660. Then, I'll add 512 MB of RAM for about $150, and buy the server software separately for $749. Comparing this setup to the pre-configured single 533 from Apple with planned upgrades (bump RAM to 512 and add a second 60 hard drive), I'll have more RAM while saving roughly $1300.
I can then take about $240 and buy a FireWire/USB combo enclosure to put the 40 hard drive in. This portable drive will be used for the students to save large files (digital video) to, instead of saving to network accounts.
I'd prefer a QuickSilver server for the speed, but this solution does provide a $1000 saving and a FireWire/USB combo drive.

Found this on MacInTouch
To install OS X Server successfully on Quicksilver G4 machines:-
1. Install OS X server (10.0.3)
2. download and install OS X Server 10.0.4 update (please note there are two 10.0.4 server updates available on apple's website - please use the later version (dated July 13th on Knowledge base downloads - Article ID: 120035 - you may have to use the search engine to find this) as the earlier July 3rd version does not support the Quicksilver hardware...
3. Install PowerMacG4Support which is supplied with the Quicksilver machine (OS X 10.0.4 software install CD - path to the updater - Mac OS X Install CD:Welcome to Mac OS X:Utilities:Mac OS X Server Support owerMacG4Support.pkg)- This package updates the ethernet kernel extension (AppleEthernetGMACE) as well as other items...
This resolves the network performance of OS X server running on the Quicksilver hardware i.e. copying files....

I hope this is the real dope, 'cos I've just ordered five CTO quicksilver boxes to run X Server for four different customers. I figure, worst case, the won't work until the server line is updated.
Fingers crossed and I'll let ya know...

At MWNY Apple was only showing OS X Server 10 running on Quicksilver power macs. There were no striped G4s to be found anywhere in Apple's booth. There has to be a way to get it to run.
