Perhaps this shouldn't be in the server area, but I'm not sure I'll get a response in the general OS X discussion board. This is a repost of what I posted there. I am in the process of transfering all of my websites from a OS 9 Appleshare IP server to an OS X machine. Everythings working great except for one problem. I like to keep source files and things on the server so that I have access to all the files from anywhere. So I create one large folder in the root web folder that holds everything for that particular site including a folder that holds the actual site itself to be served. I then create an alias to the folder that holds the finished site in the root directory so that my links won't be so far down in the directory structure.
For example, for a site called site 1, I create a folder called site1dev in the root web directory. I might then create 3 folders inside it called media, working files, and final. Final is where the actual site lives. I would then create an alias to the final folder in the root directory and name it something like site1 so that the address is
http://server/site1 instead of
http://server/site1dev/final/site1
Well, if you haven't guess by now, this doesn't work. Web server does not recognize the alias as a directory and therefore says the directory can't be found. Anyone have any idea? I've thought of some work arounds, but I would really like to find a way to make this function work.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can suggest some ideas.
