I have extremely simple server needs, but I can't seem to figure out the best way to set things up. I'm hoping someone here can help out.

Here's my situation:
My wife and I each have older portables running 10.1. We have a G4/867 that is now running 10.1 Server. Everything is connected by an Airport network in the house and the G4 routes it out through the DSL modem. My wife and I both use our portables at work and then use them at home about 50% time if the other person is using the G4. We share MP3s, pics, and some home files. The G4 has two volumes: Mac HD and Shared. Shared has four folders: Music, Pics, Home, and Backup. I would like to configure our network so that either one of us can boot up our portables at home and have each of the shared directories mount in a convenient location. I would also like our home folders on the G4 to mount.

Here's what I've been able to do:
I set up the root domain on the G4 and set up a sharepoint for the Music folder. This mounts on my portable, but not in a convenient location. It mounts in Network/Servers/Quicksilver/Volumes/Shared.

I would like it to mount either as a volume in the Finder or in Network/Music. I don't want to set up the other directories until I find out more info. Can someone please give me some pointers on getting this set up in a convenient fashion. I've read through Understanding Netinfo and the Admin Guide. Unfortunately, both are geared toward a slightly more complicated situation than I am in and I can't seem to scale down for my simple needs. Any help would be appreciated.

So you don't think I am crazy: I'm a student developer so server wasn't that expensive and I'm trying to get my feet wet so that I can set up a slightly more complicated hierarchy in our lab (about 15 users). While a netinfo setup would certainly benefit the lab, I don't want to have the lab shell out hundreds of dollars if I am not going to be able to set it up properly.

Thanks,
kman

Actually, I can't get anything to automount at all. I can view the root domain using netinfo manager from my portable so it is definitely connecting. All my share points are setup to be shared in the /Network/root domain. I have a user file for myself in the local domain on my portable and in the root domain on the G4. Huh...

Well, I've figured a few things out. I reconfigured the laptops local domain and the root domain so that there are not duplicate user records. This enables us to log on to the root domain from our laptops and access our home folders in the root domain.

However, I still can't get the Applications folder in the root domain to mount in /Network/Applications when we log in to the laptop. I have it set up to share and I've tried both automounting and static mounting. Neither one seems to work.
