Hey all, I am having problems setting up a netinfo parent, I can't figure out what Im doing wrong. First off, the machine is a g4 450 dp, i am installing to an empty 5 gb partition. Now I know that you are supposed to select parent domain in the setup assistant on first boot, but the option isnt there, it has the choices "local netinfo only" and "connect to a netinfo parent" below this, where it should have the option for host a parent, there is a message that says "no net info domain could be found on the network" (that is not verbatum). If I select connect to a netinfo parent, an error box pops up with a similar message. So essentially the only option I have is local netinfo. I have tried changing over to a parent domain with the Netinfo domain setup application, but after selecting "is a setinfo parent", it reverts to "connects to a netinfo parent" after restart. I have wiped the drine and re-installed over three times, the first time it was not connected to a network, the second time to an OS 9 10baset network, the third to an os X client 10baset network. I cant figure out whats going on. I have read through the entire directory services section in the admin guide, but it wasnt helpful in the slightest.
Any help is appreciated.

Take a look at http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/ and download the Understanding and Using NetInfo PDF. This has information on setting up a NetInfo Parent. The most important thing to remember when setting up your server is to have DNS already running and to restart your server after you run the NetInfo Domain Setup program.
Good luck!

Hi there, i had a lot of difficulty setting up my shared network paren domain on my G4 server which is running Mac OSX 10.0.4. However, i found instructions from some very helpful people on Apple's discussion forum. Look for Mac OS X Server (10.0) Discussions>Directory Services\NetInfo>Setup Assistant missing NetInfo scenario.?.?.
Graham Perrin gave instructions which i followed to the letter and hey presto-it works!. Local & Parent domains appeared and different user & group lists were all in place. so Good Luck.
