worth upgrading a file server?

I've got a G4/500 running OS 9, acting as a file server (over 100 base-T) for about a dozen people doing graphic design work. The files are being served from two external HD's. Currently, the machine runs AppleShare IP 6.3.1. I'm not using any internet (web, mail, LDAP) services on it, nor do I plan to.

I'm considering upgrading to OS X Server for better stability, but my big question is- is it worth it? Will I see any performance increase as a result? Any reasons not to do it?

TIA...
