I was just wondering if Terrasoft would bother getting YDL to run on the Xserve. Is there any advantage at all to running Linux as a server over OS X Server? Is there anything that OS X doesn't support that Linux does? Of course the one major advantage of Linux wouldn't apply to the Xserve since its not like you can get it bundled with Linux to save on the cost of the server. I thought it was very interesting to see the price of Win 2k server. That price is ridiculous, however I think that there are a few things that Win 2k supports that *nix servers do not, specifically, acting as a windows domain controller or wins server. I think its great that Apple is getting support from the major server application developers but I have a feeling that they're not going to be able to get MS to port over some of the peices of Win 2k server to OS X server. I don't know, its just a hunch. . . .

I'm pretty sure Terra Soft will support the Xserve, it may just take some time for them to do. The architecture for the motherboard is a little different plus Apple has a custom chip on the board for I/O, so it may take them more time than normal to support it. Add into that hot-swappable drive support. Reasons behind supporting Xserve is that it's faster than the current rackmount server they sell(which is just a rebundled PM), plus it's smaller. The Xserve would be a good fit for companies running their Black Lab software, so expect support from Terra Soft.

Well if you want the genooine MacOS-X server version for the Xserve hardware experience then just get an Xserve. If you want YDL to run on a server it is trivial... just get a GVS9000 (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/gvs9000/gvs9000.shtml)

The GVS9000 while not as spiffy looking as the Xserve... it does offer more bang for the buck. Come preloaded with YDL and MacOS-X server.
