So, I have been using Powerpoint v.X for about 3 days straight, and there are some things that are bugging me about it. I thought I might ask the geniuses (geni?) of Macnn for some answers.

First, what is a metafile?
and
Why does Powerpoint have to convert this metafile for every slide that I scroll through?

Second, has anyone ever had powerpoint keep trying to convert metafiles over and over again? See what happens is I am just sitting there reading a slide when it starts trying to convert this mysterious metafile. Then I have to force quit and hope that I saved anything I was working on. This happens after about 30 min of use.

This is just really annoying, and any insight on what is going or how to fix it would be much appreciated.

if this is the same as metadata then this is an os9 format that was used to tell which app owned a document w/out having to have an extension at the end of a filename (like my_slides.ppt).

do your slides have the file extension? maybe adding them would help.

Is it a Windows Metafile? Those are nasty, nasty things that Microsoft Office in Windows just loves using. It seems that all over your slides contain a Windows Metafile (WMF), which PowerPoint must convert, which is a long process. Then again, it seems weird that it only starts converting after half and hour...

That must be it. However I don't think I made myself clear enough. (common problem)

The first time I click on a slide it has to convert the metafile. That in itself is really annoying.

Then, after about a half an hour of working powerpoint, it just keeps trying to convery the same one. I have to force quit it.

Sorry for the confusion.

A metafile is a file which just points to other files. Aliases could be considered a kind of metafile, as could Unix softlinks (but not hardlinks). You may have seen .ram files on the Net; this is another kind of metafile. RealPlayer uses this to determine the actual URL of a stream.

In this particular case, I would wager that the "metafile" PowerPoint is talking about is the file used to point to where your slides are. However, I'd always thought that PowerPoint presentations came as one large file, so this doesn't seem to make too much sense to me, unless there is a large metafile-like section of this file which points to parts of the file where each slide can be found.

How to keep it from converting the file? There, the only thing I can think of to do would be to go to each individual file and save the whole project at each time. Make a minor change to each slide first, and tghen change it back; that should fool PowerPoint into saving the whole thing. And if there's an option to "fast save", don't use it.

Dang, that did the trick. I have to wait through it converting all the metafiles... Thanks!
