Jusr wondering how you were encoding your music before and after the release of iTunes 4 and AAC encoding:

Before: 320 KB/S MP3

Now: 256 KB/S AAC

To me the 256 AAC is indistinguishable from the 320 MP3 file and in almost all cases sounds much better on my Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 system.

Use more space on the hard drive is not worth it. As a computer is not a hifi component, you don't need the extreme quality. For quality I have MiniDisc and CD.

Truth-be-known, I would be encoding 160 AAC, but a friend of mine and I share the ripping effort, and he wants his at 192, so there we go.

Before: 128 kb/s mp3
Now: 128 kb/s AAC - Music
96 kb/s AAC - Spoken Word

Basically, as long as I have the original CD I don't feel bad about encoding at a "lower than optimum" bitrate. As long as I can hear the lyrics and the hook I'm fine. 128 mp3's were always fine on my headset and in my car, and 128 AAC are even just a little better at the same file size. And spoken word sounds great at 96.

For the time being AAC is too restrictive. None of my machines (besides my Mac and iPod) support AAC.

I can't hear a difference between 256 MP3 and 320 MP3, but I can hear one between 256 and 192.

To me the 256 AAC is indistinguishable from the 320 MP3 file and in almost all cases sounds much better on my Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 system.
You can't hear a difference but it sounds better?

For a long time I used 128 mp3, and actually I think this sounds find for most things. But recently I decided that I might want to make it a bit higher, so I changed to 192 mp3. But since iTunes 4 I am using 160 AAC.

MP3 @ 192.

I don't want to 1) take the time to convert to AAC and 2) have to deal with incompatability with other users or if Apple's little push to move to AAC fails.

MP3's cool with me for now.

MP3 @ 192, mostly because I can then share with the rest of the comunity.

I can hear the difference between MP3 192 and ACC 192. I think one of these weekends I am going to sit down and re-incode all my cds to 192 ACC.

I gave up on VBR. It works 95% of the time with various hardware/software combinations, but CBR works 99% of the time.

I'm a "take the default" kind of guy. 160 MP3 previously. 128 AAC now.

from MP3 160 to AAC 160, the new codec is definitely welcome.
