Hi guys,
I have an avi that won't play in Quicktime, so I downloaded the DivX plugin and tried, no luck. I can play it just fine in VLC and MPlayer but I need to get it into Quicktime so I can edit it with Quicktime Pro. Are there any options for getting it into Quicktime?

Did you check the codec for the .avi?
From the "movie" menu "get movie properties" and select "video track". Then choose "format".
It should tell you which data format was used for the .avi encoding. (You may not have the proper decoder for QT)
You might also uninstall everything from the
/library/quicktime folder that has divx or avi in it's name and then reinstall quicktime.
Afterwards you can install a new divx encoder/decoder.
Also, sometimes opening the movie in QTPro 6 in classic can result in it playing fine.
There are also several DivX utilities here.

It seems its format is XVid, is there a plugin for QT for that?

3ivx
Why should I install 3ivx?
The 3ivx decoder plays back most MPEG-4 variants (including DivX 3,4 and 5, Apple MPEG-4, Philips MPEG-4 and XviD).
edit: looks like we had a moment there (simultaneous post) ...
Nice to hear you got it working

Another quick question? Now that I have this .avi playing in Quicktime, I would like to put it onto a DVD via my Superdrive to play on the family DVD player...what apps do I need for that? I hope I don't need DVD Studio Pro

You are taxing my memory this morning...
IIRC if you export the file to DV format you can import it into iMovie/iDVD.
I've not played with any of that in well over a year.
In all likelihood you could use something like MPEG4 for the file and still do the same and, IIRC, it should take less time for the encoding.
YMMV on this one..

you don't even need that. if you just Save As from QT (self-contained is not necessary) then iDVD can import it. if it's less than 90 minutes

I have the problem, that I install the 3ivx codec for playing back my Xvid files, it overpases the Divx 5.07 codec, and opens the DIVX files with the 3ivx codec.
The good thing about the 5.07 is that it resolves the audio sync problem!
Is there a way to have both codecs installed, but that for DIVX it uses the DIVX 507 codec, and for xvid if uses the 3ivx codec???
Thanks

I believe with ResEdit you can open any of these codecs and edit (or add or remove) the THNG (or something like that) resources, which tell the codec what FourCCs to claim. never tried it though.
Alternative solutions include: DivX offers an XviD delegate component that supposedly sends XviD files to the DivX decoder ( www.insaneness.com). It's never worked for me though. Also, if you search versiontracker for an ffmpeg quicktime component, you'll find something that decodes all the mpeg4 and msmpeg4 codecs, and I think it does not override other codecs.
On the other hand, why do you care which codec decodes it, as long as it gets decoded?

Because the Divx 5.07 decodes it better! The 3ivx still has the audio Sync problem, so you donīt hear the Sound with tne picture. Itīs out of sync!
Thatīs the problem.
But Thank you.
Now I found that the MPPlayer 2 decondes also xvid. So the solution is to keep the 5.07 decoder, to play divx in Quicktime and play xvis in Mplayer2
Thanks!
