I keep on getting error messages when I try to play my movies that I dl'ed.
Now I just got an ibook G3.

I already set up a shared folder with my PC comp. (using Win XP)

Now I got a movie transfered..but the error message is:

"You may experience problems playing a video track in (name of movie here).avi) because the required compressor could not be found.

what the heck do I need?

Now the movie is 8Mile, but it does this with a few other of them.
I thought they were mpg when they were on the PC comp.

I can't get this to play on the Win. Media Player either.
I downloaded FFMPG as well...still no luck

any help is VERY much appricated..

if it won't play in VLC, chances are you're humped. The only codecs VLC can't play are Indeo (very old), and WMV3 (very new). It's also getting more common that dummy files are distributed to discourage piracy. So, can it play in Windows? Open it in QuickTime (ignore the warning) and hit command-i (info). What does it say by "Format"?

Thanks for all the help I'm getting so far.
I'm still not going anywhere..but all the advice is very much appricated.
I'm new to this mac stuff.
PC is all I ever have known. It's learning all over again.

Anyways, on to the topic here.

yes, it does play in Win XP.
the error message I get w/ Quick Time is:
"...missing software required to display this movie..."

so am I maybe missing a driver or update?

btw..nothing happens when I play the movie anyways...
the time just keeps on ticking

look. every movie is different. if it doesn't play, you have to dig in and find out what type if file it is, and what codec is used. The information you've given is not helpful. So do like I said above to use QuickTime to tell what codec is used (or use a Windows tool if that's more comfortable for you. I hear something called GSpot is good for this). And read that link I gave above if you don't find anything useful

edit: on another note, why does nobody read my link anymore? is it an intimidating URL? Does it just not load?

Quicktime doesn't support as many formats as it should. Honestly.

Apple - QuickTime - Specifications

These are the formats which QuickTime 6.3 supports.
