I've been waiting until safari got out of beta since they were having very bad problems with stability.

Couple of questions:

1) is autofill as good as with explorer?

2) what is the preference file to back up favorites.

3) what if you don't like safari and add lots of new favorites to it, can you then re-import favorites back to explorer?

4) Is spell checker as good as 3rd party ones such as spell catcher?

5) Anyone think it's better to stay with Eplorer?

Thanks!

All of the browsers currently available for OS X except Opera are much better than Explorer. Explorer sucks so bad that its development is going to be stopped, so you're going to need to switch to something anyway. Why don't you try the various browsers out? They are all free (except for OmniWeb, which is free to try). You will need to switch, but that's not bad since even reading the HTML straight and parsing it in your head is better than using Explorer (IMHO).

1) Yes, and better. It can pull autofill data from the address book too.
2) /Users/your_user_id/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
3) I think there might be some third party tools that can do this.
4) Yes, Apple's system-wide spell checker is used, and it's quite nice.
5) Heck no. If you don't like Safari, try Camino or OmniWeb, but IE is dead.

The ONLY thing I like about Explorer over Safari is the download manger. Explorer would let you reload files that were partially downloaded, and Safari just starts the whole download over again from scratch. IE's download manager just seems better, other than that, stick with one of the alternatives.

There are still things that are unique to Internet Explorer like the page holder, saving web pages including images and the auction manager.
It's a shame that development has been stopped. The current version sucks on OS X.

If you want to use Safari you'll soon find out you can't manually import your existing bookmarks...to get around it go to versiontracker.com, download "Safari Enhancer 2.0.5"....it will let you import your bookmarks from another browser. I just went through this myself, hopefully it can spare you some trouble...so, good luck!

Safari really, really needs resumable downloads like someone mentioned earlier. I'm really appalled that Safari, Chimera, and OmniWeb don't do this. I mean, Explorer's implementation of resumable downloads was really crappy, but at least it worked most of the time. This seems like a really basic feature that all browsers should have. I hate having to use Speed Download just for this.

Actually, iCab can save pages including images too.

Oh, and as for download resume: I say, just use curl. It's simple and lightweight and has never once crashed on me in the middle of a download.

It left for a huge download cache file though...

Course I'm saying this and I loooove IE, I can't stand any other browser.

Once again, there IS a MSIE 6.0 for the Mac, but it is only available in MSN Explorer for Macintosh, and you either have to have MSN Service or pay $10/month to use it with your existing Internet service.
