OK, before I consider upgrading NOW Up-to-Date & Contact Manager for use in Jaguar...has anyone compared Now Up to Date with iCal through active use? I haven't really looked around iCal much yet, I was hoping someone had some insight. What's iCal all about? ANy comments...complaints..rave reviews...advice?

Also, are NOW Contact & FileMaker Pro redundant? Can I get FileMaker to emulate NOW's functions? I haven't used FileMaker before but am ready to learn; I need a database program, not just a contact manager...can I get FM to do everything NOW does?

thanks again to all!

Um, well, yeah, if you want to make a contact database in FMPro, more power to ya. Personally, I like Address Book just fine, since it's a centralized contact place that any OS X app can talk to. Any FMP database you write won't be born with the ability to talk to other apps.
The central address book on a computer is one of those "it's about time" ideas, IMHO. The first time I fired up a faxing application and it instantly knew all the fax numbers of all my contacts, I was sold.

What's iCal all about? Erm.... keeping your calendar. Allowing you to subscribe to public calendars- I had a Tour De France calendar in mine to keep track of the race this year. Someone else wrote it for me.
If you're already using Jaguar, is there some reason you're not trying out iCal for yourself and seeing how it fits your needs, instead of seeing if the forum can determine that for you?

I just started using jaguar, and am deciding what I need to upgrade and whether I should; I don't want to go to a huge amount of trouble setting up and learning a program if I might not need it/if it's redundant anyway....I thought I might see what others thought of it, save myself some time....no worries!

iCal is fine -- if you have a fast computer. It's really too slow to use on a daily basis on any of my machines (iBook 600, G4/450, B&WG3/350). I am hoping that with Panther I will be able to sync with my Exchange calendar, and that it will run fast enough on a new G5 to use it daily.

If you are using Now Up To Date and Contact as a standalone, single user, I would think that you would be quite happy moving to iCal and Address Book.

I use NUTD in a shared calendar office environment, and iCal is not able to offer this functionality.

As for FMP...well as a database application it potentially offers vast flexibility for your needs, but why would you want to recreate another calendar/contact application when there are so many about?
