I ran mail.app in training mode for several months before switching to automatic. The spam filter is catching a fair percentage of spam but it seems like the ratio of passed spam to junked spam (approx 1:2) has not changed much since I went automatic.

Does mail.app continue to "learn" when reset from training to automatic mode?

I've been running Mail and Eudora side by side for a couple of months now. Interestingly enough, Eudora is catching more junk than mail is. I'm finding that Mail is letting about as much through as it catches.

mail.app is catching about 90% of my spam. Do we all get different spam, maybe?

Me:

40% penis enlargement pills, Viagra and general drugs.
30% money making schemes, including mortgages
30% porn
10% other. Nigerian scams, etc...

It's important to empty your trash for mail to keep learning.

I get a lot of spam but never porn, Mastrap!
Maybe if you stop visiting porn sites you won't get as much porn spam...

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist...

Seems about right, except mine doesn't add up to 110%

I get 200+ spams a day and (6 email accounts, 1 which is over 7 years old) and I would say Mail catches 90-95% of it.

The stuff that it does not catch seems to fall in two buckets:

1) Spam with very little text
2) Spam in a different language

Mail in Panther is set to have better filtering plus add the ability to key off of ISP level warnings like Spaminator.

I had not heard this before. Surely once it is in your Junk folder it knows it is junk. Why do you have to empty the trash?

I am not sure about math skills, but it apparently does seem to have an adverse effect on your verbal skills.

By the way, excellent topic, critter.
I, ASIMO.

Yeah, right. Another common spam myth.

From mail help:

" You should also periodically delete junk messages. Correcting misidentified messages, and deleting junk messages, improves Mail's ability to correctly detect junk mail."

110%. Damn. Sorry.

Well, I get a lot of spam

Why is it that some messages are marked as junk but remain in my Inbox? I have to manually delete these.

You need to turn Mail on to Automatic mode. Go Mail... Junk Mail...Automatic.

You know how when you gloss over text quickly, your mind sometimes forms words that aren't actually there? Mastrap, looking at your spam breakdown, I thought I saw "monkey porn" in there somewhere.
