Hi,

I'm trying to set up some rules for the junk mail that Mail misses. For example, emails for "Generic Viagra". So I set up a rule to search for the text "Generic Viagra" in the message body - but Mail is failing to see it. And I know it's text it's not seeing - i.e. not a jpg of text.

However, if I try the same thing looking for text in an email from a friend it works fine. So I guess my question really is, is there something that spammers are doing with text that makes Mail's search engine fail to see it for what it is?

Thanks in advance!

Yeah...you need to look at the SOURCE of the junk mail you're getting, not just what you see in the normal mail viewing window.

Some messages are encoded, so the text string doesn't exist in the message until it's decoded in the viewer.

Other messages may have embedded, non-printing characters, in between the spelling of the words to foil rules like this.

You're best bet is to keep telling Apple's JUNK filter what is junk. It should then start learning the new rules to catch it.

I HATE SPAM!

Glad to be of service!

Yeah...I was fighting this using Entourage. I keep using the "Show Source" feature to look at the raw message and then try to identify some unique thing that I could make a rule about. I ended up with a ton of rules, but still had to spend time creating new one's daily.

I then decided to switch to Mail. My biggest concern was being able to accurately send attachments to Window's users without them getting extra attachments. Through research here on these Forums, I've found that as long as the attached files ARE AT THE END of your message, then the message shows correctly with the proper attachment at the other end. Haven't had one complaint yet!

Also, using Mail's Junk Mail Filter is a LOT faster than trying to write your own rules in Entourage. It's really accurate! Can't wait to see it in Panther. Might actually get rid of ALL the junk mail.

Is there a way to have mail search for specific attachments, like .pif, .scr, etc?
