I've just switched servers for several domains, and would like to use the built-in SMTP of the PSA (Plesk) distri they're based on.
I've been trying for days now to get it to work.
Whenever I tell Entourage.X, Apple Mail or Gyaz Mail 1.1 to use SMTP authentication, mails do not go through, unless I wait about 1/2 hours after checking the POP accounts.
Sniffing Port 25 in the shell gives me this:
"AUTH PLAIN AHBoaWxieQBkc*
503 you are already authenticated"
Uncheck SMTP authentication, and it works (but obviously only for the 1/2 hour or so the server has me "already authenticated").
The same thing work without a hitch withOutlook Express/Win2k on VPC, and with Eudora 6b26, too: send mails 10 Seconds after checking mails in the same account/domain, with authentication set to ON. The difference is (again in the shell): Eudora says "RSET", to which the server replies "250 flushed". Whatever this means.
Is it possible to get this to work in Entourage.X? This is driving me nuts
TIA for any help!

I don't have the answer for you, just some more info:
I use authentication with Earthlink using POP3/SMTP with Entourage v.x and don't have that problem.
It seems odd that POP activity would affect SMTP activity with your servers. On Eathlink the POP server and the authenticated SMTP server actually resolve to different hosts (IP addresses), so I wouldn't expect the SMTP server to have an cognizance at all of my recent POP activity, (The un-authenticated SMTP server is yet a third host. I use the authenticated server because it lets me in even when I'm not accessing the internet from Earthlink's portals.) But even if they were the same host, I don't see why the POP and SMTP servers would share info.)
Sniffing on the Terminal, Entourage ends the POP3 session with a UIDL and a QUIT.

It could be that they're using POP-BEFORE-SMTP, which basically only allows SMTP-AUTH for users that have used their POP account within the last 30 minutes. So, if you can't send mail, try receiving it first.
I had this on my Linux box, but I don't like it as much as 'true' authentication.

I am not completely sure but I believe PSA is a different kind of SMTP authentication that's only supported on Windows. Most email programs support SMTP authentication as you have mentioned but domain authentication is a Windows thing.

That's what I've been beginning to suspect...
But how come it works in Outlook Express/Win, even if I specifically enter authentication name&PW? is this the "domain authentication" waffffle was mentioning?
BTW, just now I'm being shown a new kind of jokey error...
Entourage says «mail could not be sent using the account"bla@bla.bla"»; Explanation (haha!) «sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5. 7. 1)»
What new devilry is this? It worked without a hitch just a few hours ago, simply by making sure that POP is checked before using the SMTP server.
