vMac is a piece of software that lets your current Mac emulate an old Mac Plus. This lets you run System 7 and play old games that wouldn't run on a new Mac.

I have vMac working and can load in System 7. But I can't get any other disks besides my System7.dsk in. vMac will not recognize them as a reable disk. I believe the disk images vMac works with must be in the old Disk Copy 4.2 format which seems to end in .dsk . I have tried to save some files in Disk Copy 4.2 format using Disk Copy 6.3.3 but vMac won't read them.

The System7.dsk file that vMac does recognize has no special icon is OS X and just says it is a document under Get Info. So i don't thing vMac is going to read any .img or .smi files. Anyone know how I can create these old .dsk files?

I think that it worked with .img (NDIF) files for me. It was nice because I could make them 40 MB in size (quite big for a Mac Plus!) and have a virtual hard drive for vMac.

I'm pretty sure you can make NDIF files with Disk Copy, if not, hdiutil can do it.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

When making disk images, make sure to save them as HFS. It's easy to forget about that, but most disk images made over a few meg default to HFS+ format in disk copy, rendering them unreadable by System 7.

vMac is cool.
