I just connected to a cable modem for my Mac (OS 9.1). I now have to worry about security since the modem is always on. Is there a recommended software to use ... and if so, does it slow down my connection?
I plan to have a wireless router, which also has encryption. Is the router encryption going to be the same, slower or faster than if I just use a software utility on my computer?

thanks,

check versiontracker.com. I've used Norton Personal firewall.

Not noticeable.

Router encryption and router firewall are two different things. Most routers have built-in user-configurable firewalls, and all current wireless routers offer encryption. Firewall is against unauthorized access to your computer and its resources, encryption is against attackers who 1. want to hack your two-way communication with a server, for example to obtain personal info about you, 2. share (the term is "leech") your broadband wireless connection.

I suggest, as a start, you refer to netgear.com for a very user-friendly explanation of home networking and wireless topics.
