Well, I finally have to stand up and applaud M$. This is the pricing scheme that has taken me from the world of "h3ll no I won't pay that for Ofiice" to "I will gladly pay".

I unfortunately need office to function with work (academic hospital), sure there are other ways to 'make due' but having mac native office is the best in my mind.

And since I have a desktop and 2 laptops at home, whenever I try to use office I have to yell downstairs to tell my wife to turn off her airport reception, or the licensing cancels the launch.

Now I can have 3 *legal* copies of office running at home for a VERY reasonable price. This is really great.

Now, does anyone know if there are significant FEATURES (I haven't seen much on the M$ site) added to this version, or just pricing?

All in all - this is a great move on M$ part - I bet they sell more copies of office - I am gonna buy one now....(hmm...how did I have it before???.....)

I have been feeling the same way about M$ but one question bothers me is that I seem to be unable to find an answer too. When M$ states that no upgrades are avialable for the student/teacher version... do they mean no major upgrades or no upgrades period. As in... if there is a bug, you are scrued because you bought the cheap version.

Any insight on this? Hopefully an outsider can clear this up.

They mean there are no major upgrade discounts available for the edu. version. This is common for many edu. products. They are so cheap already that upgrade discounts aren't offered. You will still be able to apply minor updates.

Yeah but if the next EDU version of office (which gives you THREE licenses instead of one) costs $150.. the regular upgrade (ONE license) costs about the same I imagine.

So the next version might cost the same as the upgrade.. maybe more.. but you get 3x the value

I think MS did this to attract people who downloaded it

You definitely get to apply bug fixes, etc. This is simply for major upgrades. The student version is SO cheap now ($50 per license) that to offer a discounted upgrade price is crazy. Also, as someone above said, the upgrade price will prob be about the same as the next full price student version - if they keep the same pricing scheme.

It just seems this isn't a 'new' version, just new pricing, no?

Based on the name, it seems the terms for the license to Student and Teacher edition would require someone in the household to be one of those two things, right? Apple's site doesn't say anything about that, and interestingly, I can't get to microsoft.com right now.

Why on earth would I buy one license for $380 when I could legitimately license my Cube, my wife's iBook and another machine for $150?

I feel like I have to be missing some big 'gotcha' here....

Okay... I guess the gotcha is that it's for home use only (I can't outfit my business at $50/seat), and the home must contain a student or a teacher

Well... aren't we all just students in this great adventure called life?

okay I'll bite... I've been waiting for the price of this to drop $399-$499 is crazy (when I could use that for an iPod)

So do they want some kind of proof that you have a student or teacher at home?

I would order this and put it in my iMac now and my new PB when it gets here

Here's a question:
Does anyone know if the older version of office v.x for students/teachers can be installed on more than one computer?

Thank You... I just had to make sure because we all know M$ always seems to have holes. Honestly, I am interested and will more likely get the student/teacher version but the only hesitation I have now is that Panther is due and M$ has already stated that an upgrade is in the works. Hmmmn...

As of now, I am holding it out until then.

Most of the people who buy Microsoft Office XP Student and Teacher edition are neither Students nor teachers. Most stores don't even check.
