I recently bought a Pioneer P-105 internal CDRW/DVD-RW and wanted to test out its DVD burning capability by making a backup of my data. To my surprise, I discovered that I didn't have iDVD2 on my QuckSilver Mac (running OS X 10.2.6), and in fact had no software that burns DVD's. I tried finding it on Apple's site, versiontracker, etc., to no avail. I believe it came free with OS X 10.1; I have it and it mentions the program as one of the apps. However, I searched the install CD, and even with Pacifist, I couldn't find it anywhere. What's the scoop - is it a hidden file or does it masquerade under a different name? I know that I can buy iDVD3 or Toast to work with this burner, but I didn't think I had to spend any more money just to make simple data backups on a DVD disk.

If your Mac didn't include a SuperDrive when you bought it, you don't have iDVD. It is only included with Macs that have a SuperDrive.

If your Mac did include a SuperDrive, then it will be on its own DVD or the Restore DVD. It is not part of the OS X Install CDs. It is way too big to fit on those.

Try http://www.radicalbreeze.com/blaze/index.html it might help you out.

iDVD2 is not available for download, you'd have to plunk down the money for iLife. It's irritating, but if all you want to do is make backups to DVDs, Blaze reads like it'll do what you need.

you don't need extra software to make data backups on a DVD-R. just stick in a blank DVD-R, follow the prompts, drag your files to the disc, then burn it. oh, and make sure you have at least 4.7 GB free on your system volume.

iDVD is just for making video DVD's.

Thanks for these replies; they're very helpful. I did download Blaze, dru, and that may be what I need if I need anything at all. tr, will a DVD-RW also burn without additional software in the same way as a DVD-R disk?

Quite right. I missed the detail about this being for data DVDs.

Yes, as long as you have a DVD-RW capable drive. To erase the DVD-RW, use Disk Utility.
