Hi,

I would like to record my minidiscs and maybe some programs from the radio into my mac. Are there any free (or cheap) programs which will encode into mp3 straight from a line-in source?

regards

Try Wiretap, from Ambrosia, which can be downloaded from their free utilities page. It is not as powerful as Audio Hijack Pro, but it is free.

I was going to recommend Spark ME, doesn't do straight to MP3 but its free and it works. It was by TC Works who appear to have become t.c. electronic and I can't seem to find a link to Spark ME. Although that could be something to do with webpage incompatibilities mentioned on entry to the site.

The tc webpage is a bit complex but, the url for Spark ME is just:

http://www.tcelectronic.com/SparkME

Just click the download Spark ME link at the bottom of the page. You have to fill in a form to get the actual download url.

I've used Spark ME for line in recording before. It works great but it took a few hours to figure out how it works. The one drawback is that it won't save to MP3 so I have to save the captured audio as a aiff or a wav and then use iTunes or LAME to convert it into an MP3.
