on startup it gives me this load of crap:
"Backup is unable to confirm you have a .Mac membership, which is required for backing up to CD or DVD discs. Without a connection to .Mac servers this application is unable to back up to iDisk as well. You may want to check your Internet connection and verify your .Mac account status. However, you can restore from an existing Backup disc."
Then I have to quit (it says my trial period has 0 days left of it - yet I have PAYED nigh $100 for this bloody service!!)
I can use iSync with .mac and I can use my iDisk from the finder and I can access everything .mac related just fine except Backup.app.
I am using a proxy for http and ftp - but no other apps seem to have a problem with that, including Apple apps (heck even software updater works fine)
But Backup.app does not.

I have not been able to use Backup through a proxy. If it cannot confirm your .mac membership it gives this irritating message. There are a few big problems with Backup (such as its speed). Hope there is a newer version in the works.

Especially when you consider that the chances that one of the Backup.app engineers is reading this message here is about 1 to 10 million.
Tell Apple about your problem if you want it to be fixed!

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Oh, and they already know (the bastards)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75355
"Symptom
When you open Backup, an alert box appears with a message that says the application could not connect to .Mac to verify your .Mac membership.
Products affected
Mac OS X 10.1.2 or later
Backup 1.0 and later
Solution
Move the computer you want to back up to a place where proxy severs are not required. Backup 1.0 and later cannot be used with proxy servers.
The first time you open Backup your .Mac account is verified, which is why the computer needs to be located outside of proxy servers. After your membership has been verified, you can change the backup destination to CD/DVD. The next time you open Backup, the authentication process is not required. You don't even need to be online to back up to CD/DVD.
Note: When opening Backup after the first authentication, you will see an alert box with this message: "iDisk Server is Unreachable. The iDisk server is either unavailable or unreachable. Please try again later." The options are to select "Open Network Prefs" or "OK". If you click "OK", Backup will open with CD/DVD selected as the backup location."
... and where the **** am I supposed to "Move the computer you want to back up to a place where proxy severs are not required." huh?!
Fix this Apple!
