I have a desktop g4 which runs entourage and sends and receives messages fine. I got a new g4 laptop and installed entourage. It receives messages fine. However the laptop will send no messages and gives the error
" A message in the Outbox could not be sent. The account which created the message cannot be found" Alternately it says " Mail could not be sent using the account "Capital net email"
I t also gives error message -3170

I have spent two hours with the internet provider correcting pop etc and another hour with Apple. I had no help with the Microsoft Entourage website.
Any help would be appreciated since I want to go on the road.
I can copy the address and send a message using my Yahoo acct. so the connection seems fine.

Don't understand what this has to do with the PowerBook Forum?
Anyway, reinstall Entourage, or delete the Microsoft User Data in your Home Folder and replace it with the one from your desktop: now it should be exactly the same e.g. no errors.

While technically you can delete the Microsoft User Data folder and replace it with the one from your desktop, you don't want to do this. First, it's a bear figuring out how to have the PB assume ownership of those files - Entourage will not open them by default as it knows it belongs to another user/machine. Second, you'll have duplicate messages and the like.

The only reason Entourage will not send messages is because your mail settings are incorrect. Simply open the mail settings (Tools/Accounts) on the PB and the desktop at the home time and go through each checkbox and field one at a time to ensure they're identical. You'll be up and running in no time.

The reason you're getting the 3170 message is because you are not hitting or authenticating to the SMTP server. First make sure that you've entered the proper SMTP server - the format is smpt.domain.com for most SMPT servers. Second, you need to check your email before you can send email - to log in to the server. Third, make sure your user name and password are correct.

Not true.

Entourage doesn't know there's another user, it simply opens up as you were on your PowerMac.
Furthermore, on one machine you tell in the account settings to leave mail on the server, in the other you delete mail on the server as soon as you have it in.
Since the PowerBook is your mobile Mac, you want to have the stuff permanently on your desktop Mac, and use your PB as a mailchecker while on the road.
Of course you can do it the other way around.
In order to keep the PB updated, just now and then replace the M$ User Data with the one from the desktop Mac.
I've done this for years (works fine in OS 9 as well).

There is some sort of glitch in having Office on two machines. When I got my PB in February, I installed Office, with the intention of doing e-mail from both machines. I immediately ran into trouble with having the program (or Word, for that matter) on both machines.

Someone sent me a script to run that would get around it. (I must point out I legally own Office -- I didn't bootleg it from anyone else. It's mine, I have the CDs, etc.)

That said, I echo the person who said one of your settings must be out of whack.

When moving your folder, make sure office notifications is turned off -- otherwise you'll get a "sorry -- file in use" message.

I would try this:

- double check your settings
- ask your the tech that hosts your email whether or not you need to authenticate users.
- if the outgoing mail server still doesn't work, try using an smtp from your dial-up/broadband provider

Who is hosting your email?
How are you connecting to web?

Update troubles:
I followed Appleman's suggestion and I deleted and reinstalled Entourage from the cd which I posess. It still has the same problem.

I use a dialup connection at 48,000 max and it is on server Capital.net

I'm still listening since it is still a potential problem.
I find that I cannot send mail out on my Yahoo.com account either

Both receive mail fine at home and all is well with the desktop g4.
THanks for all the help

The reason is didn't work is that Appleman gave you some bad advice - unless you know how to take ownership of files, you don't want to copy the Entourage database from one machine to another.

Check out this thread where I asked the same question about a year and a half ago:

danbrew

(but do check to ensure that your settings are the same from machine to machine)

Let me know if you figured this one out. I am experiencing the same issue on an iBook. POP receive works fine for two email accounts, but SMTP will not send. The same thing happens for both Entourage and Mail.app

Setting are correct and have been verified on my G4, the only difference is the actual connection to the internet, unless there is something set that I cannot see or do not know about. The mail was sending, now it is not.

Pretty frustrating, hope I do not have to reinstalll OS X.
