As of Oct. 15, users of Microsoft's free Web-based MSN Messenger and its Windows XP-based Windows Messenger will need to upgrade their software to a newer version or be shut out of the service, the software giant said Wednesday. MSN Messenger users will need to upgrade to version 5.0 of higher; Windows Messengers customers will need to upgrade to version 4.7.2009 or higher; and consumers with MSN Messenger for Mac OS X will have to use version 3.5 or higher.
Does that mean OS9 users stuck with MSN 2.1 are well and truly stuffed (other than by upgrading to OSX)?

MS will provide a new OS 9 client of MSN Messenger. However, it will require OS 9.2.2.

From this article on MacCentral...

Microsoft will release a new version of Messenger for Mac OS 9 users, but you have to have the operating system updated to version 9.2.2. MSN Messenger 2.5 for Mac OS 9 will be available on August 27, 2003 on Microsoft's Web site.

Phew. Thats good. I wonder if it has any new features? (Otherwise they might as well call it v2.1.1)

Yes, they stopped adding NEW features, but a bug fix and updating it so OS 9 users can use it still after Oct. 15 does not mean its still actively being developed...much like any future updates of IE for Classic will only be security updates.

Hi:

I am, or rather was, using MSN Messenger v. 2.1.0 on my Wall Street Powerbook G3 (233 GHZ, 2 GB, 192MB RAM, OS 9.1).

When I tried signing in this evening, a message came up saying that I needed to upgrade to MSN messenger v. 2.5

I downloaded the new version, only to find out that I needed OS 9.2.2. Which brings me to my question(s)...

Is it possible for me to upgrade to OS 9.2.2 straight from 9.1 and if so how do I go about doing it? Where do I go?

Also, on Apple's site it says 9.2.2 won't work with original model powebook G3's...does my computer fall into this catergory?

I would really welcome your thoughts on this. Eagerly awaiting someone's reply. Thank you!
