I have just had to download the realoneplayer, to listen to Test Match Cricket (it is worth it I promise you!). Is it as evil as it always was on the pc - you know ruining everything?

Not in my experience. I have all of the iffy stuff turned off, though.

The Mac RealONE player is just that on the Mac..a player! On the Windows side it attempts to be everything for anything.

Anybody else done some tracking experiments on this stuff?? I never trust it on my PC and I haven't downloaded it now either because of it's bad rep.

I've never had any issue with it. I've only used it for a few sites, but it seemed to work ok and didn't try to take over my Mac.

I just went through the preferences and disabled anything that I didn't like, like the sending of the GUID and cookies.

I haven't had any trouble with the RealOne player on the Mac. In fact, it actually does a better job than QuickTime (let me clarify: it sounds better) at handling certain audio files that have been encoded at a very low bit rate (i.e. online sermons, not music).

Pretty good in my experience, and the only way you can listen to the BBC online - for that alone, I am grateful.
