Hi all. Can anyone assist? I'm trying to help a friend setup RDC to work with his W2K laptop. I've only ever set up RDC to connect to Windows XP machines, and would appreciate a step-by-step guide from anyone who knows their stuff.

The basic gist is - Home network, two machines, one router - One PB17 running RDC and one W2K laptop being a pain in the ass.

Much appreciated.

Wet Jimmy.

You can't. Win2K doesn't come with the RDC 'server'. The only version of 2K that you can do this with is Win2K Terminal Server. WinXP is the first consumer version to ship with RDC capability. I guess you'll have to use VNC instead.

I hate to sound like the Xerox guy, but that's not quite true. The Windows 2000 Server family has Terminal Services, in both "Remote Administration Mode" (up to two members of the local Administrators group can be on at once, in addition to one at the console) or in "Application Mode" which is similar to NT4's Terminal Server edition. This option requires a Terminal Services Licensing server to be activated on the domain.

But you are correct in that Win2k Professional does not have the capability to be a Terminal Services server.

Timbuktu and VNC are your options here.
