Waste of time and money.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

He's right. It's simply not necessary. Modern hard drives are so fast they can saturate the ability of your computer to process the data, so it doesn't really matter where the data is stored on the platter.

No they can't, if they were we wouldn't need RAM anymore.

Of course you are right. What I meant was that the hard drive can saturate the ATA interface. Of course it can't saturate the front side bus.

I may still be wrong...

Okay, IF you have a small hard drive and not enough RAM for the programs you use, then hard drive fragmentation CAN become a problem.
With that established, the safest and most dependable defragging software for OS X is still Alsoft's PlusOptimizer, which is an OS 9 program that is included on the DiskWarrior 2.1 CD. I use it occasionally myself, so I know it does a fine job on OS X disks.
