I've been having a problem downloading from FTP sites (like trying to get OpenOffice.org) via Safari. In fact, it doesn't work at all! The downloads just time out.

I have to use Mozilla instead which always works for ftp downloads.

Any idea what's going wrong? Is this a Safari bug or is there possibly a corrupt preference?

Safari's FTP support is pretty dodgy...

FTP browsing is handed off to the Finder. Downloads from links direct to a file on an FTP server are fine, provided you don't need to go through a proxy to get there -- it ignores proxies for FTP completely and is quite bluntly useless.

The few times I've tried Safari for FTP use it has been slow when it worked but the Finder created a mounted volume, representing the FTP server, on the desktop.

The first time it was under my browser window and I missed it till I closed that window.

Safari does not handle FTP downloads.

This would be a Good Thing, if it respected the user's choice of default FTP client (Transmit in my case). Then it could be said to decrease bloat. However, it simply hands the FTP downloads off to the Finder no matter what you've picked, and the Finder's FTP support is terrible.

This should be, I suppose, considered a bug.

In Jaguar I have used Vince to designate Transmit as my ftp protocol handler.Once Safari detects an ftp download, Transmit launches and handles the task. Vince will let you select apps to handle different protocols. I can designated RBrower, et al. The same software Monkeyfood also now has a pref pane which provides the same functions. Because of further Finder evolution I don't believe this version will work in Panther.

Hmm - Safari hands off FTP to Transmit fine for me.

You beat me to it!

I haven't checked More Internet under Panther - I hope it should work (unless they've deprecated InternetConfig for a more open LaunchServices)
