This guy is trying to.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=2555673237

Also here:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11358

What does everyone think? I think he should be allowed to do it since he didn't like the song and he claims he will delete the file on his machine. He is selling the AAC file, not a CD conversion of it.

How would one authorize a song to be played on someone elses computer?

Betcha this won't happen... or will it?

interesting matter...

I believe this is not possible at the moment. Same thing people are complaining about that you can't buy music for someone's birthday for example.

It was featured in the movie Master of Disguise staring SNL alum Dana Carvey. While I haven't seen this move, I understand that there was something about a turtle involved. If you buy this song, you'll be able to listen to the part around 0:45 where Devin changes the lyrics to her own, or the false stop around 3:00. You can even listen to the entire song straight through, you're in control when you win this auction!
Wow.

Uhm... why is the song at $2.06 when you can buy it from the source at $.99?

Actually, if this guy figures it out, I would like to sell the entire LXG (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) Soundtrack I bought from Apple.

It sucks and I will not likely ever listen to it again.

Any takers? I paid $9.99 (plus 6% tax) for it?

At least if it was a CD, I could sell it on ebay.

Update: It's at $7.51 now. And this is for ONE SONG.

Because unless you share a computer/iPod or burn her a CD, then when you send it to the intended user the computer won't be licensed.

BTW: This idiotic auction is up to $31.01 now. How stupid.

Now at $31!! my oh my. He either has to give his log-in info to the winner in order to authorize the computer, or use the burn it, re rip it method.

edit:
$37!!! crap. I am in the wrong business.

This will turn into that Huge Cheeto auction that was on Fark. They ran the bid up to like half a million dollars or something.

What Apple 'should' allow you to do is transfer the rights for individual songs from one iTMS account to another. The song would be removed from one persons authorization database and added to the others, the other person would be alerted by e-mail that 'track-x' is available to them from the iTMS and it has been sent by 'whoever'. They could also allow people to buy an equivalent of 'record vouchers' with this method.
Amazon have offer codes that allow things like this, why couldn't the iTMS?

Current bid: US $3,550.00

heh.

I hope this does bring about thoughts on Digital goods, and what can and can't be done with em in respect to reselling.

The guy says he's donating all the proceeds to EFF, so that's why the bid is in the hundreds. I assume ebay took down the prank bids that were ridiculously large.

I think this is an awsome way to test the system. It raises interesting questions about re-selling of digitally obtained goods from the internet.

This needed to be adressed sooner or later.

I think he should be able to sell it, just like a CD. Perhaps the high bids are wealthy people wanting to own a part of history.
Could care less about tact..

Bid retractions are a-plenty.
The seller is cancelling anyone's bid if they have Zero feedback (a sign of a joker).

The excess money is to be donated, but ultimately I think the problem with this auction is that there will be no way to authorize the song on someone else's computer.

This topic has gotten a lot of "press" on the internet and is now on ZDnet. What's this about ebay having a policy about "digital" auctions? Is anyone familiar with this?
Informed of the auction by a CNET reporter, an eBay representative said the item would be removed, since "it does indeed violate eBay's listing guidelines on the sale of products delivered electronically through the Internet."
Here's a link I found on ebay about Downloadable Media
I did not know this. Does that mean all those $5 auction on how to misrepresent yourself to get a free or cheap iMac are not valid auctions?

so funny, this happens all the time. i once saw this guy sell the cardboard box his xbox was packed in. seriously. he put in bold lettering all over the description that the auction did not include the actual xbox, just the box that it was sold in.... nothing else. morons were bidding it to like $400+, more than if they just drove to the nearest store and bought one... and it didn't even include the xbox!
