If I rip a DVD to my hard disk on my G4, and then copy it onto a base-spec iBook, can I watch the files using DVD Player like I can on my G4, or does DVD Player not work without a DVD drive present? Both Macs are running OS X 10.2.6.
Thanks in advance.

Even if the DVD Player.app should not run for some reason, VLC or MPlayer should be able to play VIDEO_TS folders.
Get them at www.macupdate.com

Maybe I am missing something - can't you just use "Open VIDEO_TS Folder" from The File menu in DVD Player.app? Does the DVD player not even function unless you have a DVD drive?

That was what I was wondering - I remember in OS9 the DVD player wouldn't open if the hardware wasn't present.

It's not installed (usually) on non-DVD machines.
You'd have to extract it from the install CD via Pacifist, or copy it overr from another machine.

In OS 9, no. In OS X, yes. I usually have the DVD-ROM module out and two batteries in. The OS X DVD Player launches just fine. It even launches automatically after mounting Toast image of DVDs, something the OS 9 DVD Player does not do.
