There are a number of Encryption shareware applications. I don't trust the Verionstracker style of ratings - and would appreciate your thoughts on the one you use.

I've got documents and photos and my Quicken files that I want to encrypt and then backup.

Thanks in advance.

You can use Disk Copy to make an encrypted disk image and store your files on it.

Well, if you're going to buy Panther or a new machine, OS 10.3 will have a built-in file encryption system, right into the OS. "File Safe" or some such. The main benefit here is that it's based on your login password.

PGP is popular, or at least it was, and I think it's freeware. I know it's used a lot for email, but surely it has the ability to encrypt a file.

Just out of curiousity, why are you encrypting it? Are you going to store the CD in a public place?

I second the idea of using DiskCopy and the encrypted disk images. They work great. Once you double-click and mount the image, your programs can read and write to them like any other drive. When you eject the imagae, the drive image is protected with 128-bit encryption. It's really slick -- free -- and works seamlessly with OS X. Give it a try --> it's already on your machine!
