Will I be able to run applications properly which I store on a external drive which supports Firewire.

Looks like it works on my iPod but not sure how this work out in the long run. For example can I move Photoshop, and Virtual PC to my external drive and run them from there.

Will I loose some speed here?

Yes, you can run applications and even operating systems from an external drive.

Make sure the drive you buy has an 8MB cache and is 7200 rpm or you might experience a loss of speed. Otherwise it should be fine, just like your normal harddrive.

p.s.- It is cheapest to build yourself a Firewire External HD. You buy a regular internal HD and then buy a firewire case. This will save you easily $100.

Ok. Sounds good!

But does this mean that a 4200 RPM would be to slow. Or would it just work less satisfactory? How bad is the loss of speed?

I would really like to stay with the 4200 since this runs without any external power.

A 4200 RPM drive will work fine, but, as said, slower.
