Is there a convenient way to run Oracle9i Database Release 2 Enterprise Edition for Apple Mac OS X Version 10.2 Jaguar (see the Oracle Technology Network Oracle9i Database Downloads Web site ) on a 17-inch PowerBook equipped with the regular non-Server Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar version?

You can run it on regular OSX just as easily as on server. Just follow the installation instructions.

There are very few differences between OSX and OSX Server, and fewer still that cannot be remedied by modifying a few parameters in /etc/hostconfig

So what's the status of 10g on X? OracleWorld is taking place right now, and Apple is there as an equipment sponsor, but I haven't heard any news yet.

Do any places have 9i running on X anyway? So far I haven't seen anything about that either.

As far as I know, Oracle has never released Oracle for OSX as a production-ready product. The Developer releases are just development tools -- you can't get commercial support, etc. for them.

Most companies who spend the money on Oracle (it's expensive) want the support that goes with it. If you don't want/need that then you will probably be happier with PostgreSQL or MySQL.
