Has anybody tried to install Mac OS X Server v10.2 on a 17-inch PowerBook?
I just checked Apple's Tech Specs Web page for this product, but its Requirements section did not include the PowerBook in its list of compatible Macs .

You can install it on a laptop, it just isn't a supported configuration. In reality, you wouldn't be installing a server on a portable, hence its omission from the supported hardware list.
Actually, you won't be able to install 10.2 on a 17" TiBook since it requires 10.2.3 or higher IIRC.

Why do you want to do this? It costs $500 BTW.

I purchased the PowerBook specifically for the purpose of practicing with Oracle9i Database Release 2 Enterprise Edition for Apple Mac OS X Version 10.2 Jaguar (see the Oracle9i Database Downloads Web site) in order to pass Exam #1Z0-031: Oracle9i: DBA Fundamentals l Oracle9i Database Administrator Certified Associate Exam, only to discover that it doesn't run unless the Server version of Mac OS X has been installed.
I don't want to run Oracle in VPC, and I don't want to tweak Oracle into a non-standard configuration just to get it to run on non-Server OS X--doing so could interfere with studying the correct behavior of the database for the exam.
What should I do?

If you're in education, you can get the 10-client version for $250.

You can install it on an external FireWire HD and you would be fine though...

How would that help? The 17" TiBook requires 10.2.3+ no matter where it is installed.

Simple...you install OSXS 10.2 on the external FW, boot off the 17" TiBook...download and install the "OSXS Server Updates" onto the external FW drive and then boot off of the now updated external drive.

Gotcha, that will work. Your previous statement sounded like you were saying you can boot 10.2 just because it was on the external drive.
You can also just run the OS X Server package from the OS X Server Install CD to convert a client install to a server install.
However, this shouldn't be an issue for him since it sounds like he hasn't bought it yet. He'd be purchasing Server 10.2.3 or higher now.

Yeah, sorry for the confusion.
Any purchase made now of OS X Server or XServe will come with OSXS 10.2.5 CD's....

Whew! You had me concerned there for a moment with the discussion of incompatibility of any OS X Server version lower than 10.2.3 with my Hammerhead .
Indeed, I hadn't purchased it yet (and glad so, too...) .

Of course, the education discount! I had looked at that option before for purchasing the PowerBook, but somehow it had slipped my mind for OS X Server.
Great idea--thanks!
