Hopefully you guys can tell me how to do this in Mail... otherwise, its probably back to Eudora for me!

I have multiple email addresses... most of them are just auto-forwards to my main email address. In Eudora I could setup multiple accounts (aka profiles), one for each email address, even though I don't do either POP or IMAP from those addresses. Why would I do this? So that I can send mail with the From part properly filled in with whichever address I was wanting to respond from.

In Mail, it appears it won't allow this. You can only set the From to an address that you either POP or IMAP or .Mac from! Ouch!

Is there anyway to set the From some other way?
Is there anyway to create an account with bogus POP settings such that it doesn't complain but it also doesn't do anything?

If not, anyone know if Panther has added this feature? (maybe I can hold out that long by using other mechanisms until then)

Thanks!

Easy.

Just enter your second From address after the first address in the Email address field. You'll want to enter something like:

myaddress@domain1.com, myaddress@domain2.com

Note the comma after the first address.

FYI this has been discussed to death in other threads, a search for Mail, Eudora, and profiles probably would find several threads.

I searched, I promise. Searching on those keywords you suggested found this thread and an ancient Mozilla thread. Searching on Mail and From and a few other things found numerous threads, but nothing on this topic. I don't doubt they are out there... but in this case I think I needed to know the answer to find the right words.

Thanks, Proton... but one more thing I still can't figure out (and the threads I have now been able to find on this don't answer it either)...

How do you tell it which of those addresses to use as the default? It consistently picks the stupidest one possible. Why wouldn't it pick either a) the first one, b) the one with the same name as the description, or c) the one with the same name as the account???

Instead it seems to pick one out of the middle that is as different as possible from the account. Sheesh.

What's the trick?

Okay, no matter how I reorder the addresses in the comma-delimited list, it always picks the stupidest one. So, there must be something about that address that it likes.

Its not because its the first alphabetically.
Nor the last alphabetically.
Its not because its the shortest length.
Nor the longest.

I even tried scattering the proper address through the list (multiple times) hoping it would select it... nope.

And it not only is putting the wrong default in the From, but the "automatically copy me" capability doesn't use the selected from, it uses that default one. Doubly wrong!

Please tell me there's an answer.

... my beloved Macs don't like me today (see printer sharing thread) ...

If I were you, I'd stick with Eudora at least till the Panther version of Mail comes out. I switched from Eudora to Mail about a year ago, and have regretted it more times than I can count. The only thing keeping me from going back is the hope of an improved Panther Mail. But if not...... it's back to Eudora for good. The problem you're having is just one of the many, many ways in which Mail doesn't even begin to compare with Eudora's features.

Here's the specific thread I was remembering.

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...highlight=mail

-------

As for why Mail happens to choose one particular "from" address, it usually defaults to whatever address is associated with the message currently highlighted in the normal mail window.

This is so that if you have multiple accounts, you can just hit reply, and you will, by default, be replying from the address the email was sent to.

-------

Changing programs for something you use as regularly as email can be frustrating, but really it just takes a change of attitude. If Eudora does precisely what you want it to, use Eudora. If you want to use Mail, get used to the idea that you may have to change some of your usage habits. There is no single "right way" for an email program to work, it's just up to personal preference and work habits.

Uhhh... okay, I guess the answer is in there somewhere... I'll take your word for it.

Ahhhh... I was hoping for that on "Reply"... but never considered them doing that on "Compose"... and of course all my testing was right after reading a post... so my Mail window was showing the stupid address where all my Forum reply notices go. [sigh]

Great! Problem solved!

Mucho thanks!

This is what I do:

Create a new account. Fill out the required Incoming and Outgoing Mail info. Go to the Advanced pane of the account dialog. Check the box called "Enable this account." Uncheck the box that says "Include when automatically checking for new e-mail."

Now, you can send e-mail from this account, but you will never receive e-mail into this account unless you go to the Mailbox menu and explicitly choose the menu command to get mail for this specific account.

When you compose new e-mail, there is a pop-up menu in the message window that allows you to select from which account the e-mail will be sent. The name and address associated with the account you select is where any replies to your message will be sent.Simple!

What about when you hit the "Get Mail" button on the toolbar? Does that only get mail that have the "Include when automatically..." checkbox checked? Or does it get all your mailboxes? (I was assuming that checkbox only applied for the timed/automatic gets of mail, but pressing "Get Mail" would get them all.)
