Is the DVD scratched/damaged? Does it work OK with Apple's DVD Player? Do other discs work OK?
Just trying to narrow down the problem to the 3 possible sources: software, hardware, and the disc.

Try resetting your preferences. I was having problems playing large MPEGs and that fixed it. Perhaps you set one of the options that deal with DVDs and forgot about it.

I've got a different problem with VLC but since there's already a thread I didn't want to create a new one.

I upgraded to version 0.6 and when I did that I could no longer play WMVs, I'd get an error box saying:

ffmpeg: more than 5 seconds of late video --> dropping (to slow computer?)

An MPEG that used to play gives me an error about an .mp4 decoder and then it begins to play with the video timer jumping about erratically.

I then upgraded to 0.6.1 when it came out but it gave me the same problems. I later installed a RAM upgrade and VLC 0.6.1 began to function. Great, I thought, the newest version is just more memory hungry than 0.5.x.

When 0.6.2 was released I upgraded but it was broken once again.

The too slow computer thing is not right because MPlayer works great and it also uses ffmpeg.

I prefer VLCs UI to MPlayer since it allows easy double sizing and offers a time slider.

Does anyone know what's going on with this? I tried deleting everything relating to VLC and downloading a fresh install but that did nothing.

It's probably encoded. VLC has to crack the security and that can take a long while. Then again, sometimes something just doesn't work. Those problems are often only solved if someone with knowledge tests the DVD

VLC gets more memory hunger by the day
Did you try resetting your prefs yet? you can do that from the preferences dialog.

You have to understand that VLC and Mplayer are two very different structures. It may be that your computer is fast enough, but something else is wrong, which is just resulting in all the pictures being too late ending in a "more than 5 seconds late" message.

Also, mplayer automatically plays movies with framedropping enabled, VLC doesn't if your computer is slow, you might benefit from setting the "Hurry up" option in the ffmpeg module preferences. It's explained in the README

Apperantly, a folder called VLC got created in ~/Library/Preferences that I never noticed before, deleting it has restored functionality.

It still won't play some MPEGs, it claims it can't find the mp4 moov decoder or some such even with a brand new copy downloaded...
