So I want to buy this edition for my friend who is in school.

Can I do this since I'm not a student?

I mean is there anything special about this. Meaning do you have to show ID or something to get it? Or have some special thing to prove you are a student?

I mean it seems anyone could just order it whether they were a student or not.

I already have Office x, but I figured my friend has been wanting them and his birthday is coming up...

you could just select his school from the edu apple store, then bill to yourself but ship to his school address if you want to be legit. but there is indeed no verification process.
