How many months has it been since Safari 1.0 came out? We need an update. Maybe after the Paris keynote?
I'm thinking that we're still supposed to be in beta and it was only the MS announcement that they were terminating Explorer development that triggered the Safari 1.0 release.
But given all the bugs people report, I think we're due for 1.1 release.
I still use Safari the most, but certain bugs (probably some related to the websites, and some the fault of Safari) still drive me up to wall... and back to Camino or Explorer. I still have all three browsers in my dock.

You'll get 1.1 in Panther. Last time I installed a 10.2.7/10.2.8 build, it included a newer 1.0 build.
I have a feeling you won't see many updates for Safari on OS X 10.2. The WebCores between 10.2 and 10.3 have diverged which will make it difficult to keep the two synced.

A lot of people are going to be staying on X.2 for quite some time and it'd be a shame if they'd have to deal with the bigger Safari bugs just because they don't want to spend the $ on X.3, when X.2 is already quite a nice mature OS.
But if you say X.2.8 includes a new 1.0 build, maybe that's good enough. How good is the new Safari 1.0 build?

Maybe that's Apple's plan. Apple wants people to upgrade to 10.3.

Microsoft announced that new Internet Explorer versions will only be released bundled with new OS versions.

In its currently public state, Safari is a free add-on to your system.
In Panther, its changing to being part of the OS. I would guess this means you need to pay for Panther. I can't see Apple having 2 different versions one for X.2 and X.3 on going for more than a few months.

Although this news is over 3 months old... Microsoft is no longer developing new versions of IE for Windows as it will be "embedded" into later versions of Windows. However, IE 6 as it is can still be updated for bug fixes. As for IE 5 on the Mac... they decided not to continue it because of Safari. The same thing though, they will release bug fixes for the current release... Which I believe they did about a month ago. Microsoft certainly isn't bundling new versions of IE with Panther or any later Mac OS'.

Exactly, that's what I thought....I knew they would fix outstanding bug fixes; however, I don't consider those "new versions", those embedded versions are nothing but bug updates.

Hrm? I never said they were new versions. Microsoft is releasing bug fixes for the Mac OS and Windows XP and lower.
Windows Longhorn and future updates will have the browser built in... or embedded into the OS. Which means it can't easily be brought back into older versions (what they're claiming anyways). It's kind of like how WebCore is now more part of Panther, so they can't easily bring Safari 1.1 to Jaguar. Makes sense now?

Oh I'll upgrade to X.3 all right. But not everyone will. I'm just saying that bug fixes for X.2 would be welcome. There is no need for the X.2 version to include any new browser features.
BTW, I find it amusing that these days bundling the browser with the OS is considered OK. Way back when, MS pioneered the concept, but was rapped on the knuckles for doing so.

It's still not considered ok, but apparently all you have to do is wait for the presidency to change parties and then the DOJ will drop its case against you and you can bundle away.
Basically M$ got away with it, and Apple not only *can* do it as a result, but practically *needs* to given that M$ announced no further explorer development (besides bug fixes) for the Mac.

I know you didn't, but Developer did above...hence my original question on this whole thing.

IE 6 for the Mac exists... but only "bundled" as part of MSN for Macintosh... in other words, you have to pay $10 a month to use it with your existing internet service.

No that was VERY different.
They integrated the browser into the OS so people wouldn't bother launching Netscape not to mention it even deleted the Netscape icon from the desktop.
Also this is when there was a browser war on, there isn't one now.

There isn't? If Apple were to include Safari as a part of OS X, this is the exact same situation... killing off Camino, OmniWeb, etc.

You can remove Safari without breaking OS X. You can't remove IE without breaking Windows.
This is far from the 'exact same situation'.

With this Java update, Safari seems to run a lot smoother. I also tested Java out, and it is significantly faster. Very nice update.
