I have Safari preference set to "remove download list items" manually. And it think it usually does that. But I just downloaded a software, and I saw it flash "cleaning up now" and then there was no dmg file.

which is real annoying if I want that in future.
Any tips or ideas on this appreciated. thanks

That is an Internet-enabled disk image. It copies its contents to the same folder as the image and then moves itself to the Trash. If you still want the image, you can retrieve it from the Trash.

That was probably a so called "Internet Enabled" disk image which is trashed after it has been mounted. You can retrieve it from the trash.

just to clarify: Safari has nothing to do with this behavior. It is purely a function of the disk image itself.

Thanks for great answers, so that explains why some dowloads the dmg remains on the desktop and with other downloads, the dmg go to the trash, becasue, as I understand it, the developer designed it to go to the trash, correct?

Yup. I hate those internet enabled disk images... grrrrr! Neither Safari (which, while not directly responsible, does have some sort of interface to the disk mounting program, since it displays mounting status) nor Disk Copy seem to have preferences to ignore the internet enabling.

I just downloaded a software and there was no dmg, I looked in my trash, I did notice it was a zip file that got uncompressed and left a folder on my desktop. I'm wondering if anyone can give me an overview on the different things that happen in downloads. thanks!!!!!!
