iTunes and lost files

iTunes seems to have developed a nasty habit, whereby it continuously "loses" files. The file will still be listed in the library, but trying to play it (or update my ipod) results in a warning that the file could not be found. I can browse to the file, and it will be just where you'd expect.
I've searched the archives and I can't seem to find a solution. Is there one?

The exact error message I try to play one of these files is:
The song "Suspense Hypothesis" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?
[cancel] [yes]
(with the correct title, of course).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I used to have this happen in iTunes 3. I thought it was always something to do with the filenames, but i dont know how they would have mysteriously changed.
how many songs does it happen with? I had it happen to me on about 2 dozen songs

iTunes Track CPR v1.0
aug 26 '03
This script attempts to locate the files of so called "dead tracks" (iTunes tracks designated with (!)) which you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music ƒ > Artist ƒ > Album ƒ > file.xxx). Any correct files found will be added to iTunes and will replace the "dead track" in each playlist it appears in (except Smart Playlists). Most tag data will also be rescued (play counts will be lost). Tracks whose files cannot be located will be ignored. Additionally, a text file report is generated that lists the tracks that were successfully resuscitated and the tracks which couldn't be revived. Not a perfect solution! Read Me should be read thoroughly. iTunes 4 only.

I'm surprised this bug hasn't been fixed already. It was in iTunes 3 as well. I have lots of missing songs in my Library.

It happened to me (I posted about it a few months ago). I tried a bunch of stuff and inadvertently trashed a large part of my library. This was only partly my fault - I thought I had copied my whole library, so I trashed the old one, but it turned out that only part of it had been copied due to some bug. When I analyzed what was lost, it was only albums that had been run through CDDB - those I had entered by hand were unaffected. I have a hunch that something in CDDB corrupted the files.
Since I moved my library to a new hard drive and re-ripped everything that was lost, I haven't had a problem. Fingers crossed.
Lesson learned: make CD/DVD back-ups.
