Applications that invoke automatic spell checking as I type (Mail.app, Tex Edit) have suddenly started to lock up after each word, with an Alert "Couldn't contact Spell Checker." Similarly, attempts to check spelling from the Edit menu fail in the same way.

Where is this Spelling Checker, how do I restart it or reinstall it (short of reinstalling everything....), and in general, what's going on?

OS X 10.2.6 on a 17" iMac, if it matters. And of course I'll be glad to provide further software details if someone can tell me what might be relevant.
