For this to work, the cell phone company has to have an AIM->SMS gateway.

I work at Cingular, and we just launched one of these. To work with Cingular, you just use the phone number as the buddy name. I'm not sure if this is the same for other carriers, but I would assume so.

If I remember correctly, I think you need to put a + in front of the number.

I use cingular and I tried this but it doesn't seem to work for me. I just get a message saying that user isn't online. Do I need to be using a newer phone (mine's a year old)?

You must put a +1 in front of the area code and number for it to work.

Unfortunately, it seems my cell provider doesn't support it though. :-(

Hey, this appears to work with Verizon too. Thanks for the tip!

Where? In the box where you normally type the message. Or do you add them to the Address Book?
Thanks

Let me get this straight.
+1(area code)(number) that's it? No matter what I do it comes back this person is offline.
Does the person have to have an AIM or Dot Mac account or even be logged in but just away?

Thanks

Yeah, that's the right set of numbers. You are starting a new chat with someone right? Not just choosing someone already in your list? When you hit command-shift-N it asks you for the name of the person to invite. Enter the number there and chat as normal. I just did another test on mine, and it worked great. Took only about 4 seconds to get to my phone.

It might be their cell service too.

This sounds like simply the full international dialling code, so I'd imagine you'd drop any leading zero off the area code (but then again I don't think US numbers have area codes starting in zero so that probably doesn't apply)

Works for my T-mobile phone. (+1<areacode><number>)

I get this message in response:

"Your IM has been sent to my cell phone and, although I can read your messages, I cannot reply. Thanks for your IM! Want your IMs forwarded to your cell phone? Click here."

This is a software thread, kinda (could be Networking or something else entirely...), so I'm moving to Software.

Anyone found out how and IF this works in Germany? I can send to a user named

+49(areacode w/o leading Zero)(number)

or

+49(areacode with leading Zero)(number)

but same result: person is not connected to the internet. Nothing arrives...
