When I try to run speed disk I get an error message 23040 saying that I need to run disk doctor, but after running disk doctor I still get the error message. Have ried everything, including booting from CD etc and running Aplle Disk Utility to repair files, but I still keep getting this error message. Symantec support sent me a discussion page but none of the suggestions helped. Has anone had a similar problem?

If you are using OS X, I would discourage you from using Norton. Also, Speed Disk and other de-frag utilities are not needed or helpful with OS X and hfs disks in general.

I had a similiar problem. I ran Disk Doctor which worked really well, but Speed Disk wouldn't work.. I was getting error -8739 or something. I wrote to Symantec support and it turns out this is a widespread problem with SD and OS X, it happens when there is a file in your system that SD doesn't know how to handle so it just stops.

I liked the Utilities and DD worked really well, but I just switched to Disk Warrior just like everyone. I wrote to Symantec and requested a refund and they were kind enough to comply.

Well, that's your problem. Don't run Norton stuff on an OS X disk.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

LOL! Best advice on the use of Norton I've ever heard!
BTW, on The Screen Savers the other day, they were comparing firewall programs for Wintel PCs. Norton's was rated the worst.
