Okay, I hate to feel stupid, but I download X11 and now I haven't a clue as to how or where to get applications to run on it. Can someone give me a briefing?

this will be a learning curve. Using fink of fink commander, install an app that looks good to you, like gimp or something.

When that's done, cd into the directory of the binary (a file called simply "gimp"), then type ./gimp and it should launch. You may have a "path" setup so that you don't have to always cd into the app's directory.

I installed gimp. Now where the hell is it?

The package I downloaded was an installer, and everything went via the osx gui.

But there is no binary to be found. I looked in /usr/local, but its not there... did a "which gimp" but nothing. What am i missing here (other than the application)?

From the X11 xterm window, enter gimp. Fink is installed in /sw. One heads up- be sure to install the X11 SDK. It is not installed by default. You find it on the Panther Install Disc 3. Look in the Packages folder.

Also, subscribe to the fink-beginners list. Lots of help there. Use the http://fink.sourceforce.net site and read the Documentation and FAQ sections.

X11 is installed on my system - the latest download for panther. Do I need fink as well? I was under the impression that X11 would allow me to run these apps without anything else...

thanks for the link - i'll be wandering around in there sometime today.

I just isntalled X11 as well, and I'm trying to get OpenOffice to work. The installer won't launch though. It opens the app (get a dock icon and recognized as open in the menu bar) but stops there. Any clue what to do?
