I'm likely going to be purchasing an external firewire drive, and with it, some backup software.
I was at the apple store today, and I got .Mac shoved in my face. I don't think I wanna spend $100/year for it.
So, my question is... what is a good backp utility that doesn't require .Mac, and what drive do you recommend?

depends how "complicated" you want your backups to be....the whole thing, automated etc.....there are a few inexpensive and free options around:
Lacie's Silverkeeper
Carbon Copy Cloner
(and countless others) before you move up into the higher end stuff like Retrospect .
as for fw drives, have a read over at MacWorld - they just did a review/comparison of a bunch of firewire drives.

Another vote for Deja Vu. Simple, efficient, cheap. Also doesn't use a proprietary format or compress the files (which could be a plus or minus, depending on your POV).

Also, Deja Vu comes with the new version of Toast. I haven't tried any scheduled backups, but immediate backups work fine. The only thing is I haven't found a way to backup individual files. At least in the Toast version of Deja Vu, I can only select folders or volumes for backup.
Good app, though.

About 18 months ago, I got a CMS drive, with automated backup software (ABS).
It works great. It has features I've never even used, but probably should investigate. But just before lunch, I decided I'd better backup my drive, as it had been two weeks since the most recent one. I clicked on the software, went upstairs to lunch and came back down to find my entire drive backedup. It is that easy.
My nearly 3-yearold desktop has only a 20 GB drive, which I've further partitioned (5 for 9 and 15 for X). The CMS drive is 80 GB, so obviously I have lots of room leftover.
I try to back up more frequently. It has saved my bacon more than once, most recently when Entourage inexplicably reverted to a pristine state, wiping out 18 months-plus of e-mails. I had backed up the day before, and so didn't have to shoot myself.
Take a look at the CMS site. The drives are pricey, by some standards, but I've been very happy.
